Module Description

This module focuses on two core elements evidence' and' practice'. The primary aim is to introduce the learner to the basic concepts and principles of scientific evidence, which will underpin nutrition and dietetic practice, policy, continuous professional development and independent learning. The module will also introduce the learner to key tools used in dietetic practice and to the fundamentals of inter professional learning and multi-disciplinary team work in the context of nutrition and dietetic practice.

Indicative Syllabus

What is evidence?' an introduction to types of evidence, criteria used to judge evidence, including levels of evidence and illustrated with examples.
?How to find evidence'; Tutorial and group work on retrieval of research, resource documents and data from online repositories including PubMed, Google Scholar, PEN, the American Academy of Dietetics and other organisations relevant to nutrition and dietetics e.g. INDI, Nutrition Society and government health agencies.
?Action on Evidence' through tutorial, group work and self-direct learning participants will perform a basic scientific literature review on a nutrition/ dietetics topic; understand the basic components of reading a published paper and identify different study designs at introductory level. Through a similar hands-on format, participants will develop an understanding of how evidence may be used to question and address misunderstandings and controversial issues in nutrition and dietetics and applied to practice. The participant will consolidate skills through independently researching and presenting a topic on nutrition/ dietetics in an oral/poster format.
Introduction to Inter-professional learning: comprises a series of tutorials and workshops to understand the foundations of inter professional learning, the composition, purpose and roles of multi-disciplinary teams in patient management; this includes workshop/ engagement activities with other health and social care professions. The participant will consolidate new skills through reflective learning and presentation of a reflective learning assignment describing their understanding of the principles of inter-disciplinary teams in patient management.
