Overview
The aim of this module is to familiarise students with the function of nutrition and dietetics throughout the life cycle in a variety of social and cultural settings,
Indicative SyllabusLectures
1. Introduction to healthy eating guidelines for the population, their evidence base and practical application.
2. The nutritional requirements, dietetic management and national / international dietary guidelines for women periconceptually, during pregnancy and lactation, their evidence base and practical application.
3. Nutrition-related problems encountered during pregnancy and lactation, the evidence base underpinning current practice and practical application.
4. The nutritional requirements, national / international recommendations and practical aspects of nutrition in infants, pre-school children, school children and adolescents, taking into consideration physiological requirements, cultural aspects and behaviours.
5. Documentation of Nutritional assessment and management.
6. The nutritional needs of vegetarians and the elderly and the nutritional requirements of conditions associated with ageing.
Practicals
1. Use and interpretation of growth charts.
2. Anthropometric measurement of adults and children.
