Module Description

The aim of this module is to provide an understanding of energy and the macronutrients and their roles in human health and disease. It will explore energy and the macronutrients, and certain micronutrients and their relative importance for various population groups and subgroups. The functions and metabolism of the nutrients in the body are explained. The concepts of the assessment of nutrient status and nutrient requirements are introduced. This knowledge is the foundation for study of nutrition-related health issues in future years of the course.

Indicative Syllabus

Lectures
Introduction to concept of energy and energy balance, including methods for measurement of energy intake and expenditure, and body composition
Introduction to the consequences of disruptions in energy balance.
The macronutrients: protein, carbohydrates including dietary fibre, and lipids, including essential fatty acids; also certain micronutrients closely involved with macronutrient metabolism; covering the biochemical and physiological functions, food sources, absorption, metabolism and excretion, deficiency and any toxic effects, assessment of nutrient status, recommended intakes .
