Module Description

The aim of this module is to develop professional competences related to dietetic assessment, intervention and evaluation in patients with acute and chronic illness in preparation for practice placement C. These competences include practice oriented elements such as communication skills and advanced behavioural change skills, evidence based practice, reflective practice, self-evaluation and continuous professional development. Professional aspects of practice such as personal and career development, performance management, leadership training, team working and entrepreneurship will be included. This module will include consideration of varying dietetic professional roles e.g. primary care, clinical specialist, private practice, research, industry.

Indicative Syllabus

Lectures:
Nutritional assessment of patients with acute and chronic illness in an acute hospital setting.
Formulation of a nutrition care plan for a range of acute and chronic conditions.
Application of standardised documentation tools such as NCPM.
Professional communication skills in relation to changing health behaviour, including current practice framework. Applying evidence based approaches to in the development of nutrition care plans.
The role of reflection, self-evaluation, CPD and lifelong learning in dietetic practice.
Theory of performance management and development and its application to dietetics.
Team working.
Professional roles of dietitians and regulation of the profession.
Entrepreneurship
Consolidation of practice placement.
