Module Description

This module aims to provide learners with a detailed knowledge of the clinical assessment and dietetic management of acutely-ill hospital inpatients who are at risk of disease-related malnutrition.

Indicative Syllabus

Lectures:
The prevalence, causes, consequences and treatment of disease-related malnutrition.
Nutritional screening in hospital, community and specific patient groups.
Clinical dietetic assessment of acutely-ill patients in the hospital setting
The nutritional management of acute trauma such as surgery; wound healing.
The nutritional problems associated with dysphagia and the dietetic assessment and management of dysphagia patients (modified consistency diets etc.)
Dietetic assessment and management of patients with head, neck, gut, liver, pancreatic or gall-bladder disorders including inflammatory bowel disease, gut cancers and other cancers
Dietetic assessment and management of patients with renal disease
Dietetic assessment and management of hospital in-patients with complex cardiovascular disease, stroke, or other chronic eurological conditions (modified consistency diets, ONS, enteral feeding)
Dietetic assessment and management of patients with respiratory disease.
Oral nutrition support
Enteral nutrition support
Parenteral nutrition support
Critical application of theory into practice for individual/individuals.
Interpretation of anthropometric, biochemical and clinical data relating to case studies
Integration of all components of nutritional status in order to devise appropriate nutrition care plans.
