Module Description

The aim of this module is to provide learners with a detailed knowledge and understanding of the structures, processes and concepts for effective management in the health services. This will be achieved through the study of the health policy and structural issues nationally and an appreciation of the role of dietitians in the wider health services will be gained. This module is designed to offer learners the opportunity to develop a detailed understanding and appreciation of health care management and the health care environment.

Indicative Syllabus

Lectures:
Introduction to Health Services Management: Defining public services and core management concepts.
Organisation and management of the Health Services: Structure of the Irish health care system. Role of the
Department of Health and Children. Role of HSE. Role of specialist bodies and professional registration bodies.
Quality Issues in the Health Services: Risk Management and Quality. Delivering quality care in the Irish health services, Professional accreditation. Ethical issues.
Leadership Issues in Health Services: Management development. Management structures.
Contemporary Issues facing the Health Services: Inc. Health reform. Population ageing. Developments in primary care. Restructuring of the health services.
Managing resources: Service planning in the Health Sector, Performance management in the Health Sector
Comparative Health care: Introduction to health care systems, determinants of health.
