This module introduces learners to a range of theoretical, cultural and historical issues that shape our understanding of the popular music text; it's production and consumption. It provides an introduction to key concepts relating to the role of music in the areas of identity, gender and race. These are considered within the broader contextual paradigm of debates pertaining to the evolution, form and function of the Culture Industries. As the module progresses, it discusses and evaluates major critical approaches to popular music and a range of related paradigm shifts that have occurred over the past sixty years.
