Module Description

This module introduces students to the theoretical and practical aspects of the design of automatic fire detection systems and emergency lighting in accordance with current national standards and legislation.

Indicative Syllabus

Interpretation of IS 3218
Selection and specification of equipment for emergency lighting systems
Selection and specification of equipment for fire detection and alarm systems
Selection and specification of cables for both fire detection & emergency lighting systems
The science of light in the context of emergency lighting design
Requirements of the Fire Services Act, 1981 applicable to design of Life Safety Systems
Requirements of ET101 with respect to Life Safety Systems
Requirements of the Building Regulations TGD B, Fire Safety with respect to design of Life Safety Systems
Fire safety guidance documents of the Department of the Environment
Using professional engineering software to support emergency lighting & fire detection design.
