Module Description

This module builds and reinforces the knowledge gained from the Electrical Plant Mod 1.

Module Aims

The aim of this subject is to build on subject matter of Electrical Services Plant Module 1 and develop a more analytical knowledge of the performance characteristics of electrical plant and equipment. To understand the requirements for commissioning procedures and documentation.

Indicative Syllabus

Categories and segregation of wiring.
Design and installation of power factor correction equipment.
Electrical noise, Voltage surges, sags, blackouts and spikes, characteristics.
Generator ratings, continuous and standby ratings.
Hazardous area equipment, intrinsically safe barriers, design and selection.
Maintenance requirements for switchgear, transformers, rotating machines.
On-line and off-line UPS equipment.
Parallel operation, ESB requirements ETCI rules.
Planned maintenance routines, records and databases, use of inspection check lists and manufacturers recommendations.
Power quality audit.
Sample test procedures for motors, transformers and switchgear.
Standby plant, containment of noise, cooling, dissipation of exhaust fumes,physical and electrical problems in the siting of standby equipment.
Standby supplies, motor-driven generator sets.
Transient and general performance.
Uninterruptible Power Supplies, transients on power lines problems of radio frequency interference,electromagnetic interference.
Voltage and frequency regulation.
