Module Description

This module explores the impact of energy consumption on the environment; energy conservation; environmental risk assessment; emissions monitoring and the requirements of current environmental legislation. The learner will become familiar with the principle of operation of all types of system specified and be able to identify the factors affecting system efficiencies. The learner will be able to carry out fundamental calculations to identify carbon emissions and energy flows.

Indicative Syllabus

1. Hydrocarbon fuel combustion and emissions monitoring
2. Energy performance analysis and optimization of the following related to occupancy and use:
(a)electrical services
(i)boiler plant
(ii)heat pumps
(b)air-conditioning systems
(c)refrigeration systems
(d)transport systems
3. Thermal energy storage and transmission
4. Heat recovery systems
5. Energy and the Environment
(a) Environmental ethics and risk assessment
(b) Energy conservation and waste management
