Module Description

This module provides students with the competence to research and understand statistical and scientific material and communicate it clearly in a journalistic style. It concentrates in particular on the use of numerical and technical information in journalism and on the skills journalists require to accurately handle such information in their work.

Lies, damn lies and statistics: why data is often misinterpreted
Elementary statistical concepts
Sources of statistics: national income, census, surveys, PR
The ?scientific method'
Understanding probability and uncertainty in science
?Data scraping'
Presenting data graphically
Why jargon is important in technical and scientific areas, and how it can be cracked
Application of data analysis to newswriting, business reporting, sports reporting.
