Module Description

This module builds upon the knowledge gained from the first year of the course and provides the student with further development in the physical and mathematical ideas required to support the other subject areas in the course

Module Aims

The aim of this module is to further develop the student's knowledge and understanding of the relevant mathematical concepts and to improve the student's ability in applying these analytical techniques.

Indicative Syllabus

MC1 Calculus: Integration, standard integrals, definite integrals, algebraic substitutions, partial fractions. Applications, area under curve, volume of solid of rotation, mean and r.m.s values. Partial derivatives, first and second order, total differential. Introduction to differential equations.
MC2 Properties of sections: Centroids, first moment of area, second moment of area . Parallel and perpendicular axis theorems. Pappus? Theorems
MC3 Matrices: Addition, subtraction and multiplication of matrices, determinants, Inversion. Solution of simultaneous equations by matrices and determinants. Gaussian elimination.
MC4 Statistics: Discrete and continuous random variables. Normal, Binomial and Poisson distributions. Sampling, Correlation and regression.
