Module Description

This module will introduce the learner to various methods used in industry to identify the condition of engineering systems with the aim of predicting the life of the equipment in order to prevent its failure. It builds on the concepts of machine operation learnt in earlier modules.

Module Aims

The aim of this module is to provide the learner with the knowledge of a variety of concepts and the skill to apply a variety of techniques associated with fault finding and condition monitoring in engineering systems.

Indicative Syllabus

Concept, instrumentation, types of applicable faults, IR thermography, camera types, specifications, errors, emissivity, example thermal images.
Condition Monitoring:
Definition, prinicple, requirements, methods, frequency of monitoring, condition criteria, associated costs.
Maintenance Manuals, symptom charts, algorithm charts, structured functional block diagrams.
Oil Analysis:
Purpose, theory & methods of lubrication, types of lubricants, properies of lubricants, oil filters, seals, troubleshooting filters & seals. Oil condition - chemicalcontamination, sources of contamination, identification, measurement & quantification of contamination, degradation of lubricants.
