Module Description

This module provides an introduction to key theoretical issues relating to the interrogation, analysis and critique of cultural production and consumption in contemporary society. Initially, learners are encouraged to consider a range of conceptual issues relating to culture, identity, ideology and representation. As the module progresses, particular attention focuses on the role played by the media in processes of identity formation and consumption.

Module Aims

This aim of this module is to: 1. Present students with an understanding of a range of key theoretical perspectives relating to culture and it's definition; identity formation (incl. gender), cultural production; cultural geography; Utopianism; Representation etc.; 2. Consider the implications of changes in attitude to the above areas within the context of contemporary Irish society.
