Module Description

This module will commence in semester 2 and will involve group projects that will be mentored by the supervising lecturer. The student will have chosen Documentary Practice as their area of specialization and during this semester they will be expected to take greater ownership of their project and continue to develop the production skills required for more independent production work in 4th year. There will still be an emphasis on production, research, organization and content development in a documentary context and this module aims to provide learners with the following: (i) greater experience of independent production and professional commissioning (ii) a more focused understanding of professional documentary production practices (iii) the continued development of innovative approaches to documentary production (iv) a more solid and mature understanding of the skills required in the creation, production and realization of media content in documentary.

Module Aims

This module will be based around a continuation of an interactive and practical exploration of making documentary programs. Learners will be required to take greater ownership of their production work. This will mean that a greater emphasis will be placed on the part of the student to successfully develop and realize their documentary project. Whilst technical skills will continue to be developed through practical workshops and tutorial seminars, learners will begin to become more independent and less reliant of their supervising lecturer. Mentoring will still be available, however, the student should possess the practical and critical faculties necessary to work more independently as a documentary filmmaker. Learners will be required to take greater ownership of their specific roles within the areas of creation, production and realization that they wish to specialize in for a project and successfully fulfill that role on a production.
