Module Description

The function of PLCs within an automation environment will be investigated.

Module Aims

The learner will be able to work as a member of a team or on an individual basis to safely build and program PLC systems having combinational and sequential elements.

Indicative Syllabus

1. Safety with respect to PLC controlled systems.
10. Reset dominant flipflop.
11. Edge detection.
12. Timers.
13. Counters.
14. Applications of sequential function charts.
15. Timed sequence.
16. Shift register.
17. Data manipulation.
18. FCs, DBs.
2. The design and commissioning of PLCs.
3. Programming to IEC 1131.
4. Practical steps and documentation for PLC programming: Circuit diagrams, hardware configuration, symbol tables, OBs.
5. PLC functions: Assignment, NOT, AND, OR.
6. PLC diagnostic tools: Signal LEDs, monitor function, PLC Sim, VAT, Diagnostic buffer, PLC clear and reset.
7. Combinational logic.
8. Logic control with branching.
9. Set dominant flipflop.
