Overview
This module provides the learner with the opportunity to put into practice some of the theoretical concepts covered over the programme. This involves the exploration of tasks associated with maintenance engineering in industry and would ideally involve liason with industrial partners. Learners will be given a opportunity to examine real situations encountered in industry and will be required to suggest and defend solutions in each case.
Module AimsThe aim of this module is to give the learner experence in real life engineering projects based in industry. It is also designed to encourage learners to establish contacts in the commercial world. It is intended that learners will be given an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to put the skills learned in accompanying modules into practice.
Indicative Syllabus1. Title page
2. Abstract containing an outline of the work completed and results produced.
3.. Acknowledgements
4. Contents page
5. List of symbols used
6. Introduction, literature survey, feasibility study, detailed analysis, description of work conducted, design, manufacturing, testing, costings, results, conclusions and recommendations.
7. Appendices (detailed drawings and costings, detailed calculations, British Standards, brochures etc).
8. List of references
A third and final presentation will be required on completion of the project near the end of the academic year at a date specified by the head of department.
It may also involve investigation type work identified in industry in maintenance related areas, such asdesigning a planned maintenance system, the introduction of a computerised maintenance system etc.
Learners are required to explain the work they have undertaken, and consideration will be given to the quality of any hardware, the report detail, the difficulty of the assignment and the effort made.
Learners are required to submit a final typed report consisting of 2-3 thousand words in total on their project work.
Learners will be expected to present themselves for two interviews during the academic year and provide interim reports on their progress.
The work may involve case studies on the impact of new technology on industry as well as the design, development and testing of products and processes.
This report will be completed to a recognised industrial standard and should contain the following:
Please note that the catalogue is provided as a guide to modules in DIT. Not all modules listed will necessarily be offered every year and new modules may also be added. Information subject to change. For detail on specific programmes/modules please contact the relevant School directly.
