Module Description

This module introduces the learner to the socio-political and ethical issues integral to the study of sustainable development.

Module Aims

The aim of this module is to introduce the learner to the key concepts and theories of politics, ethics, sociology, and social policy. The module uses contemporary examples in Ireland and internationally to address the relationship between society and sustainable development.

Environmental ethics
Irish political institutions and governance
Social change: modernisation, , environmentalism
Social exclusion: poverty and inequality, community and identity, social capital
Sociology and social policy
The social construction of space, equity and the city, participation and political culture
Urban sociology: theoretical perspectives, patterns of urbanism
