Module Description

This module covers the preparation of the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement for limited companies in the hospitality, tourism and leisure sectors; the analysis and interpretation of these statements; and a broad awareness of the concepts, principles and regulatory framework underlying them.

Module Aims

To enhance the management effectiveness of students, by providing students with a theoretical and practical understanding of financial accounting statements and their usefulness and role in hospitality, tourism and leisure organisations.

Indicative Syllabus

Review of the final accounts of a sole trader Overview of the legal forms of business organisation The specific legal and accounting aspects of company financial statements Preparation of final accounts of limited companies for internal use Preparation of cash flow statements of limited companies Ratio analysis and interpretation of accounts, by outside users, covering: profitability, efficiency, liquidity, gearing, and trend analysis Overview of the regulatory framework of accounting, including: regulatory bodies, accounting concepts and principles, financial reporting standards, and ethical issues in financial accounting
