Module Description

Introduction to the Built Environment, Building Technology and Building Construction relating to Environmental Health. Parallel Drawing Studio sessions.

Module Aims

The module aims to introduce students to the fundamentals of Building Technology as it relates to Human Health and wellbeing. To impart a basic knowledge of Building Construction, drawing techniques and the design of buildings - particularly domestic (dwellings) construction. To introduce the concept of Building Materials and their impact on human health (e.g. Dangerous / Hazardous Harmful materials & Substances - Asbestos, Radon)

Indicative Syllabus

Introduction to Building Types. Ground Conditions / Site investigations. Foundations (types and Functions). Building Regulations. Rising walls. Concrete ground floors. Timber ground floors. Walling - External + Internal. Loadbearing and non-loadbearing. Review of window and door openings in walls / damproofing /lintols. Roofing. Studio drawing sessions.
