Module Description

This module integrates and follows on from previous biotechnology and microbiology modules and will incorporate the application of biological systems in biotechnological processes ranging from food, pharmaceutical and agricultural applications.

Biological basis of cell cultures for fermentation
Expression Systems: Bacteria, Yeast, Mammalian, Insect & Plant cells
Bioreactors: Preparation, operation, monitoring
Inoculation
Products: Enzymes, biopharmaceuticals, food, chemicals, diagnostics
Downstream Processing; Product recovery / harvesting
Product purification
Scale-up, Scale-down
Regulatory and safety issues
Case studies:
Pharmaceutical application
Food application.
