Module Description

This module provides an introduction to the application of computers in the Food and Pharmaceutical Industries and to the general techniques required to work safely in a laboratory. The modules aims to bring the student to the forefront of the information technology with an emphasis on application in the fields of Food and Pharmaceuticals. Additionally, key and fundamental laboratory techniques will provide the student with the basic skills required to function safely and efficiently in a lab environment.

Indicative Syllabus

Indicative syllabus covered in the module and / or in its discrete elements
Computer Applications: Data storage and data retrieval, Search engines, word processing for scientific writing, spread sheets for scientists, database creation and use, presentation software for scientific presentations, basic chemical structure software.
Laboratory Techniques: Lab safety, risk assessment, chemical and biological waste, calibration and correct use of fundamental instrumentation, data analysis, scientific reporting.
