Overview
The Event Health and Safety Management module examines the management of health and safety issues using the Irish legal framework of statutes and secondary legislation to aid in managing the safety and health of all involved in the staging of a successful event. The module is delivered on the principles of problem-based learning where students are expected to actively develop group learning initiatives.
Module AimsThe Event Health and Safety Management module aims to introduce learners to the legislative framework for health, safety & welfare at event venues that are places of work.
Indicative SyllabusLearning review, progress on assessment. Health, safety & welfare responsibilities of the event organisers under the legislation including a practical examination of those duties. Learning plan.
Learning review, progress on assessment. Health, safety & welfare responsibilities of the paid employees, volunteer staff and sub-contractors working to stage a successful event including a practical examination of those duties. Learning plan.
Learning review. Progress on assessment. An overview of the safety, health & welfare at work statute and subsequent statutory instruments applicable to the management of events. Learning plan.
Learning review. Submission of assessment. The statutory and civil responsibilities of event managers to members of the public attending events.
Practical exercise in the identification of hazards, assessment of the severity and frequency of risks and choice of controls to adequately and actively manage safety matters at events.Review of learning, assessment feedback, outstanding issues, areas for future study
Reflection / review unit where learners think about the topics to date, apply their learning and identify gaps in knowledge and explore resources to fill those gaps.
Site visit or guest lecturer to for example, an event company or event location, or on-site, where there will be at least one expert on hand to demonstrate excellent safety management practices at events. Where possible learners should be afforded the opportunity of a question and answer period, or similar to address any outstanding questions.
Site visit to the DIT library for a learning unit on the hardcopy and specifically electronic resources available for event managers, facilitated by the Faculty librarian or deputy, application of electronic resources to the assessment.
