Module Description

This event risk management module is delivered on problem-based learning principles where the student engages fully with the learning. Students become effective event leaders by studying the principles of risk management. Attendance is required. The module builds on the attitudes, skills and knowledge experienced by learners during the management of event safety and health module. Learners draw on their existing educational experience to construct learning themselves about managing risk for events. The lecturer facilitates for the student an engagement with event risk material at a deep level, appropriate to the final year of a level eight programme.

Module Aims

The Event Risk Management module aims to enable graduates working in event organisations to adopt a strategic approach to minimise losses and maximise opportunities when planning, implementing and evaluating risk for events.

Indicative Syllabus

Learning plan, progress on group assessment, terminology and key concepts associated with contemporary risk management strategies , learning plan.
Learning review especially review week. Key functional area partnerships continued and the construction of a Risk Management Plan . The DASH initiative (ROPSA). Learning plan.
Learning review. Approaches to the categorisation of event hazards by for example, assessing the severity an incident presents with the probability of its occurrence on a regular basis. Subjective v objective risk assessment strategies. Learning plan.
Learning review. Assessment submission. Examination of key functional areas for strategic risk management support may include; crowd management, drug & alcohol control, site fit-out & tear down, pyrotechnics, evacuations, acoustics, health, traffic, staff, tickets, temporary structures, lighting, seating, access, egress etc. Learning plan.
Learning review. Progress on group assessment. Identification of key expertise in event risk management including, state & voluntary agencies leading event insurance companies, city planners, event risk consultants, rural councils, key insurance brokers, large sporting organisations, their experience, advice etc. in a guest lecture
Learning review. Progress on group assessment. Inculcating an organisational culture of risk management. Chief Executive Officer / Presidential policy and support for risk management initiatives across all functional areas of the event team. Design, delivery / communication and evaluation of the risk management strategy at all levels. Learning plan.
Learning review. Re-inforcement of the value of group dynamics to assist in the assessment process. Re-inforcement of electronic resources available via the DIT databases and electronic journals for event managers, facilitated by the Faculty librarian or deputy. Apply search to assessment.
Learning review. Risk control strategies including the retention of actively managed risks, the removal of risk posing a significant threat to the event, the transfer option of sharing risk with an external body that will compensate the event organisers if an unforeseen and loss inducing incident occurs and reducing all risks by pro active management initiatives. Learning review. Systems for the identification of hazards especially while planning and evaluating the success or otherwise of the event risk management system. Learning plan.
Reflection / review unit where learners think about the topics to date, apply their learning and identify gaps in knowledge and explore resources to fill those gaps
Review of learning, assessment feedback, outstanding issues, areas for future study, module evaluation.
The process of learning (PBL), the module aim, learning outcomes, learning resources, delivery methods, learner participation, formative and summative assessments, plan for Web CT, safety and health experiences on placement, question & answer time, assessment brief, learning plan for the following week.
