Module Description

Outline of physical.chemical.biological and human factor hazards associated with workplace health and safety. Health risk assessment identifying specific health effects (toxicology and epidemiology) associated with hazards. Legal risk assessment specifying preventative legislation/regulations and codes of practice for specific hazards outlined. Quantification of specific hazards where appropriate.

Common law. Statute law. Civil liability. Chemical hazards-toxicology,health effects-(inhalation-absorption-ingestion.) Chemical risk assessment.Classification of hazards. CLP. Implications of Reach Regulation. MSDS. Exposure control. Health Surveillance. OES. TLV.TWA. STEL. Biological Hazards.Occupational Exposure.Hepatitis,MRSA, Brucellosis.Health effects Classification.Microbiological hazards,Containment and control. Physical hazards. In particular those affecting health.eg Noise,Particulates.Radiation. Human Factor. Youth. Pregnancy.
Disability. Non-english speakers. Risk Assessment. Examples of site specific risk assessments will be given where appropriate. Quantitative risk assessment of workplace hazards will be presented where appropriate.
Module Aim
To understand specific health effects from hazards and be able to advise on legal and control strategies.
