Module Description

This course involves an in-depth investigation into the uses, and possible uses, of the Web to the Hospitality, Tourism, Leisure, Event Management industries. The course will undertake a comprehensive study of the techniques involved in the planning and development of a Web Site. It will provide the participant with a hands-on step-by-step approach to Web Site design and will enable each participant to design, create and maintain effective and efficient Web Sites. As this course is designed to provide a very practical knowledge of the subject areas, it will, therefore, take place entirely in a computer laboratory. The majority of marks are awarded for practical work completed in class and in practical projects.

Module Aims

To equip the student with a clear and comprehensive understanding of the opportunities and threats that face the manager of the future when it comes to marketing, sales and distribution of the their product on the World Wide Web and to provide each student with the skills necessary to analyse, plan, develop and manage a Hospitality, Tourism, Leisure or Event Management web site.

Indicative Syllabus

Module Introduction: The first class introduces the concepts and components of the Internet. This section also introduces the basic tools required to introduce the student to these technologies. This provides the student with an introduction to the Internet and the Web and contains important information detailing how the Web works.
Publishing, Promoting and Maintaining A Web Site: This final section will examine all aspects of the course associated with taking a web site and placing it on a server and promoting it to the world at large. Course Summary & Evaluation.
The Web Development Process - Analysis: This section introduces the student to the Web Development Process (the steps that should be taken in the development of a Tourism based website). This class focuses on the steps involved in the Analysis of the Web project, the first stage of the Web Development Process.
The Web Development Process - Planning: This section leads the student through the steps that should be taken in planning and organising an effective Web Site. Furthermore, this class will also deal with drawing up design specifications for the upcoming web projects.
Web Site Development (Part I): This section will introduce the student to the different types of tools that can be used to create effective Web Sites. It also introduces the student to the basic HyperText Mark-up Language (HTML) Tags and the structure involved in the design of any Web Page. This section progresses through to including lists, tables and links to a Web Page.
Web Site Development (Part II): This section continues with the topic of designing and developing a Web Site. This section introduces the student to some of the intermediate features of the Web such as the many different types of graphics, animations, frames and other types of multimedia.
Web Site Development (Part III): This section introduces the student to some of the advanced features of the Web such as feedback techniques, dynamic HTML, Web Site management and validation.
