Module Description

This module introduces the learner to the core concepts, principles, theories and practices of effective management essential to the successful operation of an enterprise in the Hospitality, Tourism, Leisure ane Event Industries. This module is intended and structured as a core subject, providing an integrated overview of the fundamental concepts of management which will be developed in Management II. Additionally, issues examined in this module will be further broadened in Human Resource Management and Marketing. This module is also part of the Get Smart initiative. The module will be delivered via a learner centered approach where the learner will be encouraged to apply all management concepts in an analytical and professional manner.

Module Aims

The aim of the module is to introduce the learner to the fundamental concepts of management in the Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure industries.

Indicative Syllabus

Unit 1 Introduction to the nature of management and how to do business (Get Smart) Brief overview and summary of the evolution of management thought from the Classical School to Modern theories (which will be further developed throughout each subsequent module unit).
Unit 10 Revision
Unit 2 Planning and Decision-making: Analysis, comprehension, and application of planning and decision-making tools, theories and practices within the industry.
Unit 3 Control: Analysis, comprehension and application of control techniques, theories and practices within the industry.
Unit 4 Organisation: Overview of basic forms of business organisational structure. Analysis of the competitive business environment within theory and practice in the industry.
Unit 5 Leadership: An overview and evaluation of leadership theories and styles in relation to their impact on motivation and communication, and their application within the industry.
Unit 6 Motivation: An overview of the theories and methods of motivation and their application within the industry.
Unit 7 Teamwork and Group Work: The importance, types, uses and application of teams and groups within the industry. Theories and roles in relation to teams and groups. The importance of effective management of teams and groups.
Unit 8 Introduction to Contemporary Management Issues: (Current issues i.e. TQM, Culture & Diversity, HRM)
Unit 9 Brief introduction to Management Module II topics
