Overview
This module will introduce students to the core concepts, principles, theories and practice of effective business management and marketing that are associated with a modern business enterprise. Using practical, integrated examples, the fundamental theoretical concepts of business management and marketing will be underpinned by management and marketing theory. The module should enable the student to demonstrate a broad knowledge of management and marketing and to understand the significance of these skills in the competitive world of business.
Module AimsThe aim of this module is to introduce the student to foundation elements of business management and marketing and to integrate this knowledge with related subject matter on the programme
Indicative SyllabusIntroduction to management (basic principles of management, organisation structure) Planning and decision making (environmental analysis, goal setting, competitive analysis, decision strategies) Motivation and leadership (theories of motivation, leadership styles, managing change) Human resource management (management of people, group behaviour, performance appraisal) Entrepreneurship strategies for small businesses (entrepreneurial traits, government policy on entrepreneurial development, developing core competencies, developing a business plan) Future challenges for managers (quality, performance measurement, operations, benchmarking, globalisation strategies, corporate social responsibility, e-business strategies) Introduction to marketing (the marketing mix, introduction to market research) Marketing strategies (consumer and competitive behaviour, market economics, product development strategies, branding, marketing for entrepreneurs.
