DIT Hothouse Alumnus Wins at Ireland?s Best Young Entrepreneur Award 2016

Innovator, Brian David Henderson brings home Ireland?s Best Young Entrepreneur Award 2016 prize

‌DIT Hothouse would like to congratulate Brian David Henderson, alumnus of the I-Cubed DIT Student Incubator, on winning the Best Business Idea category in the Dublin City County final of Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur (IBYE) 2016, for his fight on tackling antibiotics.

Brian David Henderson has developed a new technology in the form of a medical device that allows for an efficient diagnosis of antibiotic resistant bacteria in a cost effective and portable form. This device can aid in distinguishing between viral and bacterial infections and decipher which antibiotics will be effective in the treatment of infections. One of the main benefits of Brian's invention is lowering the number of unnecessary prescriptions for antibiotics.

To explain his new technology in the simplest way possible, Brian says “The doctor takes a swab of your throat, then puts the sample into the test cartridge and presses play (in a nutshell).  Minutes later you will get a read out so that doctors can make the call. Essentially it is a ‘Lab-on-a-disc’.

Commenting on his win Brian says “Without DIT Hothouse and I-Cubed, DIT Student Incubator programme, there would be no device. I-Cubed gave me the funding to build my prototype and skills to develop my startup business ideas.  Now I am placing in the IBYE competition, not a bad year for me so far and I am really looking forward to 2017. Things are looking up and I hope I can continue my journey in the IBYE competition and become Ireland’s best young Entrepreneur.”

Aimed at those aged between 18 years and 30 years, Local Enterprise Offices throughout the country are on the hunt to find Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur (IBYE) 2016. The competition has a total investment fund of €2 million nationally and with success earned in the County final Brian advances into the regional finals. Brian will receive additional mentoring and startup support prior to making a pitch to the Regional Assessment Panel.  In total 24 Category Winners will be selected to progress to the National Final which will take place in March 2017.
