DIT student announced Global Winner at Undergraduate Awards 2018

Posted: 24 September, 2018

A soon-to-be graduate of Marketing in DIT was announced on Friday as a Global Winner of the Undergraduate Awards 2018.

Brian Heffernan, who completed his BSc Marketing this May in the College of Business was awarded Global Winner in the Business Category for his paper 'An Exploration into Online Impression Management and the Selective Self-Presentation Strategies of Generation Z on Instagram.'

Commenting on his achievement, Brian said, "I am fascinated by the immense influence that Instagram has in society, particularly among our generation. The significant role that it plays in individuals' identity formation was particularly interesting to me. Through my research, I was able to determine the primary motivations to selectively self-present on Instagram, the strategies that are implemented and further understand the complex relationship between individuals' online and offline identities. With great help from Dr. Tara Rooney, constantly pushing me in my research, and some very discerning interviewees, I was delighted with the insights that I obtained."

As a Global Winner, Brian will attend the Global Undergraduate Summit 2018, the Undergraduate Awards annual conference from 12th-14th November during which the Global Winners are awarded and also present their winning Submission.

Four other DIT students also received Highly Commended awards – Amy Grath in the Visual Arts category and Ciara Delaney, Mei Ling Tong and Orlagh Cramp in Business.

Congratulations to Brian, Ciara, Mei Ling, Amy and Orlagh on their success from all at DIT.
