This module will provide a comprehensive introduction to European classical cinema from the period 1950-1975. It will examine the national cinemas of France, Italy and other European countries, in particular key moments such as the French New Wave and the Golden Age of Italian cinema. It will focus particularly on the work of filmmakers such as Godard, Truffaut, Bunuel, Visconti, Fellini, Antonioni. The module will also address theoretical, historical, aesthetic and economic aspects of European cinema during this period. It will examine key issues such as authorship, art house cinema, the relationship between European cinema and Hollywood.Module Aims
This module aims to introduce students to some of the key moments in European film history and to engage with relevant theories, which emerged in Europe during the period 1950-1975.
