Biography

James Curtin completed his PhD in 2003 in laboratory of Prof Tom Cotter, University College Cork. He then moved to Los Angeles, to work with Prof Maria Castro and Prof Pedro Lowenstein in the Gene Therapeutics Research Institute in Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre and University of California, Los Angeles for five years. A Faculty member in Dublin Institute of Technology since 2008, he is currently appointed as the Head of the School of Food Science & Environmental Health in DIT.  

James has authored 40 peer reviewed publications and has a H-index of 26. He has secured more than €500,000 research funding as lead applicant and €1,500,000 as co-applicant / collaborator and has successfully supervised two PhD student and 3 MPhil students to completion since 2011. He is currently lead supervisor for four PhD students and co-supervisor for five PhD students. Dr Curtin is an Editor of the Journal Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, the largest and most highly cited open access journal in Neuroscience. 

Research

The goal of the Curtin Laboratory is to develop, understand and refine the use of technological solutions for the treatment of brain cancer. The research is funded through a variety of National and International research funding bodies including Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), Programme for Research in Third-Level Institutions (PRTLI), Irish Research Council (IRC) and Internal Funding. Our research involves preclinical pharmacological assessment of non-thermal atmospheric plasma, nanotechnology and other novel technologies. We combine these interventions with molecular approaches to augment the mode of cytotoxicity. This new knowledge will aid in the refinement of technological therapies in advance of human clinical studies.

Career Highlights

In my position, I have been afforded opportunities to support minorities and students with disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue their ambitions in Higher Education. An example of this was the development of a new theoretical stream of BSc(Hons.) Food Innovation in the School to cater for students with profound Physical disabilities.
I have played a role in tackling poverty and illness through education. Bangladesh is a country  with 160 million people, and an estimated 10,000 Food Safety related deaths annually. Many of these occur in children under five years old and are entirely preventable.  I am leading an FAO (United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation) sponsored project to develop a new BSc Food Safety Management and Regulatory Affairs in Bangladesh.
I was a lead researcher in the preclinical development and testing of a novel gene therapy for the treatment of advanced brain cancer. The research has led to the initiation of a Phase I clinical trial (NCT01811992: Combined Cytotoxic and Immune-Stimulatory Therapy for Glioma. December 2013 to December 2018. Trial registered by Professor Pedro Lowenstein) and has given hope to several patients with refractory, advanced brain cancer.
