New Frontiers Regional Masterclass Event - Doing Business in the UK

Over 40 enthusiastic New Frontiers Alumnus and current participants joined us last week in Deloitte’s beautifully refurbished head offices for our latest Masterclass event. There, attendees learned of the important and urgency of doing business in the UK market.

Each speaker gave an insightful perspective of how to successfully enter and trade. The topics covered ranged from exporting to the UK, to opening an office and closing that all-important first deal. 2 case studies also featured, while the main business support and networking association also gave useful market insight.

The speakers from this Masterclass included:

Christine Esson, UK New Market Entry Manager, Enterprise Ireland

Based in London, she leads a team of 17. Here in Ireland’s largest export market, they support over 2,000 EI clients with an interest or established presence in doing business in the UK. Christine’s role has a particular focus on sustainable market entry for new business start-ups. She previously held a senior position at Scottish Enterprise.

Paul Davey, COO/ CFO of Fire Financial Services

Working at PayWithFire, Paul helps leads a regulated payment institution offering consumer and business payment accounts. Previous to this, he was the CFO of successful Irish international payments firm, Realex Payments, where he helped build its substantial UK presence. This was sold in 2015 for €115 million to Global Payments.

Mark Burke, Founder & CEO, OptiWi-fi

An alumnus of DIT Hothouse’s first New Frontiers intake, Mark leads OptiWi-Fi’s efforts at optimising wireless internet connectivity globally. One of the most high profile successes has been with O2 Telefonica in the UK. He has 16 years’ experience working in Finance, I.T. and Management, leading global teams in the delivery of services and technology products.

Paul Caplis, Commercial Director, British-Irish Chamber of Commerce

Leading key aspects of the preeminent UK-Irish Business Association, Paul supports member firms through introductions, engagement with external stakeholders and work on the Chamber’s various committees. Previous to this, he held the Head of Investment role at the UK equivalent of the IDA, ‘UK Trade & Investment’ in Dublin.

David Shanahan, International Tax Director, Deloitte

David serves clients across a range of industries, including technology, media, telecommunications and life sciences. His experience includes advising clients on structuring investments, availing of R&D tax credits, M&A, tax efficient IP, finance structuring, and other tax minimisation strategies.
