My name is Marie and I graduated with a B.A in Social Care from DIT in May 2017. I decided to return to college and pursue a third level degree back in 2013 as a mature student. Back in 2014, I was part of the first groups to move to the new DIT Grangegorman Campus. My initial impression was very positive as both the setting and the personal interaction helped to settle into college life.
Over the 3 years, you study a wide range of modules from learning theoretical perspectives to more practical skills. The valuable aspect of the programme is that throughout the 3 years you go out on professional practice placements. This allows the opportunity to put theory into practice. Throughout the 3 years each placement is secured by the college. I got the opportunity to be placed in the areas of interest, such as, working with the elderly, young people in residential care and working in an educational setting for young adults with intellectual disabilities. For me, placement was a very positive aspect of the course as it allowed me to grow and question what I learned in college.
Having completed a 3 month block placement in third year I secured a permanent position within the same organisation. The invaluable experience throughout the placements, emphasis the wide range of career roles and options available once qualified. If you are looking to pursue a career that supports, plans and advocates on behalf of others who are seen to be marginalised in our society, then I would highly recommend you choose to study Social Care in DIT.
