My name is Niamh Caffrey. I graduated from DIT in 2017 with a BA (Hons) in Social Care. The Social Care Degree enabled me to experience varied work placements within social care settings. The work placements added to my increasing wealth of knowledge, developed my skills as a professional, in both theory and in practice and applying this to each placement.
Since my graduation, I secured a full time position within the Praxis Care Group. I work in a children’s residential service, offering social, emotional and physical support to children with behaviours that challenge and who have been diagnosed with Intellectual Disabilities, Autism, Global Development Delay, ADHD and many more complex needs. We aim to support these young people to become more independent in their everyday living.
My education has aided me in developing professionalism working within this setting. I believe that my Degree, has offered me many skills to feel confident in working in any social care setting. More opportunities are available to me having an Honours Degree in Social Care, as it is easier to progress with in organisations. Many of the managers can see the high level of professionalism that comes with having a degree from DIT.
The support I received throughout my time in DIT from both lecturers and my fellow classmates gave a sense of community that I will never forget, along with the friends I made that will last a lifetime and experiences that shaped me as a professional.
